IATA Travel Pass Will Use Blockchain to Secure User Data
  • According to the International Air Transport Association, their Travel Pass will rely on blockchain technology to secure users’ data.
  • Alan Murray Hayden, IATA’s head of the airport, passenger, and security products, said that the users will always have control of their data.
  • Mr. Hayden said that the Travel Pass is the first-ever example of blockchain technology being implemented to benefit people.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) will launch its Travel Pass app, which will rely on blockchain technology to secure users’ data.

Alan Murray Hayden, IATA’s head of the airport, passenger, and security products, said that the users will always have control of their data. Users can also decide the amount of data they would like to share with airport officials, airlines, and governments, Hayden added.

Also, Hayden said that the Travel Pass is the first-ever example of blockchain technology being implemented to benefit people. He also added that there would be no central database or data repository storing the Travel Pass app’s data. Furthermore, he said that the travel pass based on blockchain would help travelers securely manage their journeys.

According to IATA, it is the only way to make society free again to do everything they need. To continue, IATA also added that the travel pass follows the Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI).

IATA’s team affirmed working with the World Health Organization, as well as with other bodies to develop the necessary standardization. Following this, Mr. Hayden said that within the airline app, its passengers “will be able to create a digital version of their passport.”

In line with this, airlines like Etihad Airways and Emirates said they had joined Singapore Airlines in introducing the digital health verification pass.
